New this year there is a unique chance to dine in the Big Dining
Room of Port Eliot. On Friday and Saturday nights dinner will be served
and on Sunday there will be lunch. Created by Helen Tillott, a local chef
and associate of Gordon Ramsays, the menu is a
showcase of all the fabulous West Country produce. In medieval times the
site of the current dining room was the dormitory of St Germans Priory.
It later became the principal dining room of the Eliot family in the 17th
Century.
In 1801 it was re-designed by Sir John Soane.
Many notable figures have dined in this fine state room including TE Lawrence,
Bernard Shaw, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Heathcote Williams and in 1792,
James Boswell who recalled: we were received into a room seventy-five
feet in length and twenty feet broad, a noble gallery indeed.' He then
enjoyed a 'hearty dinner. I found it most excellent: good service, good
dinner of two courses and desert, madeira, hock, sherry 27 years old,
port, claret, and always after dinner, a bottle of champagne.'
We hope festival goers in 2005 will enjoy themselves as much as Boswell,
as they dine in the House. The evening will start with a complimentary
glass of champagne and canapés in the Round Room, adjoining the
Dining Room. Dinner will then be announced in the Dining room. Places
are limited as we are only doing one sitting for dinner, and we want the
evening to be as special as possible, there will however be two sittings
for lunch on the Sunday.
The total price for the menu is £ 35.00 Friday and Saturday evenings
and £25 for Sunday lunch
